The AI Search Shift in 2026

How AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity are changing small business search visibility, and what to do about it.

In the last 18 months, the way customers find businesses has changed more than it did in the previous ten years. AI-generated answers now sit on top of Google search results. ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity are increasingly the first stop for research-mode queries that used to start in Google. For small businesses, the question is no longer whether to optimize for AI search. The question is how.

What changed

Three shifts happened at once:

  1. Google AI Overviews rolled out across most U.S. search results, pushing the traditional "ten blue links" further down the page. For commercial queries, the AI Overview now often answers the question before the user scrolls.
  2. Standalone AI search products (ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude with web access) reached enough scale that a meaningful share of research-mode queries no longer start in Google at all.
  3. Citations in those AI products became the new "first page of Google." When the AI answers a question, the businesses it cites get the credibility, the click, and increasingly the call.

What this means for small business search visibility

The traditional SEO playbook still works. Technical SEO foundations still matter. Local pack rankings still matter. Reviews still matter. The new layer on top of that is being structured and credible enough that AI engines surface and cite you.

In practice, that means:

  • Structured data matters more than it did. Schema.org markup for Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage, Article, and Review are increasingly the way AI engines understand what a business is and what it sells.
  • Content depth matters. Thin pages do not get cited. Substantive pages that answer a specific question with specific information do.
  • Authority signals matter. Editorial mentions, citations from credible sources, and consistent NAP across the web all feed into whether AI engines treat a business as a credible answer.
  • llms.txt is now meaningful. A canonical machine-readable summary of your business at /llms.txt is a signal AI engines use.

What to do about it

Three things, in this order:

  1. Audit your structured data. Most small business websites have minimal or no schema markup. Adding it is high-leverage and low-cost.
  2. Strengthen the pages that answer questions. FAQ pages with FAQPage schema, services pages with Service schema, and content that directly answers the questions your customers actually ask.
  3. Publish a clean llms.txt. A short, canonical summary of who you are, who you serve, and how to reach you.

The full shift is still in motion. The businesses that move now will be the businesses AI engines cite for years.
